Verbenaceae

This group of around 800 thrive in tropical and subtropical parts of the world. Many of these species are highly colourful and valued summer food for pollinating insects. Lemon Verbena has commercial uses as a flavouring and perfume. We owe this to Spanish and Portuguese sailors who bought the plant to Europe from South America in the 17th century.

Verbenaceae: Verbena Family

Our native Verbena plays a significant role in a number of belief systems. Evidence exists that is was used as food, medicine and a ritual herb during the Neolithic, Bronze and Iron ages. ALTHOUGH IT IS USED AS A HERBAL TEA IN MANY COUNTRIES, IT MUST BE AVOIDED DURING PREGNANCY. The flowers are tiny and it is easily overlooked. En masse, a pretty sight.

About

According to Pliny, the herb has medical and religious significance to Romans and Gauls; he found claims made by the Magi around the plant's power "the maddest".

Leaf mining larvae of tiny flies attack the leaves, which are torn open by hungry birds relying on fat grubs for their young.
